Part II: The best Two Free MKV Player for Mac. To watch MKV video on Mac, I recommend trying either VLC Media Player or MPlayer OS X. They are both free. These free multimedia players are excellent and can tackle many of the video formats unknown to QuickTime. They contain a decoder to decode the MKV files. VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.
Web browser plugin for Mac OS X
Support for NPAPI plugins was removed from all modern web browsers, so VLC's plugin is no longer maintained. The last version is 3.0.4 and can be found here. It will not receive any further updates.
